Netizens praise NewJeans & Min Heejin's clever and new way of promoting in Japan for their debut

[cafe daum] I can feel how much of a genius Min Heejin is through looking at how NewJeans has been working in Japan

date: 27/06/2024

Until now, when Korean idols debuted in Japan, it was customary to change their lyrics to Japanese.

However, NewJeans just sang Attention as it was (the response was good).

trans: In the old days when KARA was popular, there was a saying that Japanese broadcasts were directly copying Korean songs, and that's really the next generation of idols. In reality, that's what happened. Third-generation idols mixed English and Korean in the middle, and fourth-generation idols just completely embraced the old style.

And so they debuted and showed off their crazy performance by reaching number 1 on the Oricon chart. This debut album is truly sensational.

They had songs that included short Korean words.

They made the unconventional choice of mixing Korean and Japanese. There is even more Korean (so Korean and Japanese subtitles were broadcasted simultaneously in two lines).

Since it's a debut in another country, isn't it natural to look at what that country thinks?

One of the points that I personally admired is that the current Japanese MZ generation is actually accepting Korean as hip and trendy.

Min Hee-jin accurately caught this cultural trend.

I want to think of this album as a strategy rather than a challenging attempt by Min Hee-jin.

It's a personal thought but they must of thought that there would be people who wouldn't know and think its Tokyo Pop so in the music video they plastered 'Seoul Seoul Seoul' everywhere.

Moreover, the genre is New Jack Swing. In Korea in 1990, Y2K was mixed to create Korean City Pop.

You may have come across an article about a Korean idol holding a Tokyo Dome concert.

Tokyo Dome is a symbolic entity for Japanese singers. It is like an indicator of success.

But instead of a concert, their debut fan meeting was held at Tokyo Dome.

This fan meeting is also becoming a hot topic in Japan.

Hanni sang Aoi Sangoshou on her solo stage

If you watch the video, as soon as the song starts, the audience reflexively screams without realizing it.

In Japan, performance culture is more subdued; people only listen quietly and of course, rarely sing along like that, almost never shouting.

In another video, when the prelude starts, people are murmuring and whispering, thinking, "Could it be? Could it be?" Just that short reaction alone can tell you how surprised they were. But why are they surprised?

It's because of the song choice.

Seiko Matsuda, who debuted 40 years ago, is a legendary Japanese singer. Her representative song is Aoi Sangoshou.

There is no Japanese person who does not know Aoi Sangoshou.

It goes well with the Y2K sensibility pursued by NewJeans but if you look deeper, you can see that it was really planned.

This song is not just a hit song by a legendary singer but it symbolizes Japan during that time.

Many people compare Aoi Sangoshou to Purple Scent but I think the essence is different.

Subjectively, it's like a foreign singer debuting in Korea and choosing a Seo Taiji song for their solo stage.

When the song starts, and the prelude of "Come Back Home" plays like 'doong doong doong'? Even I would get chills and make me scream.

Aoi Sangoshou sung by Hanni with short hair and a long skirt?

It freely evokes nostalgia for Japan's most prosperous days and the sentiment of the bubble economy when Japan was in their best state

He's not just any grandfather who was overwhelmed seeing NewJeans; he's Murakami Takashi.

Looking at this old man's 'Ba-Bam' you can see how well Hanni performed on stage.

Let me add after reading the comments: Takashi Murakami is not just an ordinary old man. He is a world-class pop-up artist and a representative Japanese artist. He is famous for his collaborations with Louis Vuitton, known as the Murakami Edition.

As all Korean women know, I will not explain in detail but will show you with pictures.

Anyways after the fan meeting, Aoi Sangoshou dominated Japan's Twitter real-time trend and Yahoo!'s hot searches (surprisingly, Yahoo is the Japanese people's Naver and Google).

Since Hanni must have not known about this song, it must have been Min Hee-jin's decision, but her sense was so genius that it's bewildering.

Conclusion: Min Hee-jin knows exactly what the public likes and NewJeans proves it.

I wrote this because I was in awe by how genius Min Hee-jin is. I wrote it deliberately expressing the awe in a way that makes others feel the same way.
